Preparing for Long-Term Care

Did you know that Medicare typically doesn’t cover nursing homes or any in-home care? According to statistics, someone turning 65 today has almost a 70% chance of needing some type of long-term care assistance.1 This includes self-reliant activities such as bathing, eating, getting dressed, using the bathroom, and even getting out of bed. Costs for these types of support services can cost up to $100,000 annually.2 Long-term care insurance, or LTCI, can help cover these expenses so that you can preserve assets for other goals such as your retirement. When considering LTCI, here are some factors to keep in mind:

  • What all does it cover?
    • Nursing home care
    • Assisted living facilities
    • In-home care
    • Adult daycare
    • Care advisory services
    • Home modifications
  • When’s the best time to buy LTCI? The American Association for Long-Term Care Insurance (AALTCI) recommends purchasing in your mid-50s. The reason is that your age and health plays a factor in rates and qualifications simply because your health diminishes with your age.
  • What are the costs of LTCI? The costs varies greatly depending on a number of variables that include:
    • Age and health: more health problems likely come with age
    • Gender: women typically have higher rates because they live longer
    • Marital status: premiums are higher for single people
    • Amount of coverage: based off of daily and lifetime benefits, cost-of-living, and more

As you get closer to the age of retirement, planning ahead can help spell the difference between a happy retirement and a stressful one. • 3 tablespoons butter
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 2 cups cut fresh asparagus (2-inch pieces)
  • 3 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1/8 teaspoon pepper
  • 2 teaspoons chopped chives
  • 1 teaspoon minced fresh parsley
  • 1/2 teaspoon chopped fresh dill
  • 1/2 teaspoon grated lemon zest
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice
  • 2/3 cup crumbled feta cheese
  • 1/3 cup grated Parmesan cheese

  1. Cook tortellini according to package directions. Meanwhile, in a large skillet, heat butter and oil over medium-high heat. Add asparagus; cook and stir 3-4 minutes or until crisp-tender. Add garlic and pepper; cook 1 minute longer.
  2. Remove from heat; stir in herbs, lemon zest and lemon juice. Drain tortellini; transfer to a large bowl. Stir in cheeses and asparagus mixture.

Two Power Moves

You can always generate more power on the links with these two simple tips in mind:

  1. Hip turn. Oddly, many golfers have poor or no hip turn and don’t even know it. Next time you’re on the range or the tee, focus on turning your hips all the way so they’re facing where you want the ball to go. Limiting your hips only limits your distance.
  2. Power loading. Your trailing should be a key source of power, so it needs to be locked and loaded. To practice, grip the head of your club and allow the shaft to run up the back of your trail arm – making sure the shaft is in contact with your arm. Then, swing your hand back while keeping your shaft connected to your arm. This should help rotate your trailing shoulder properly.

Your Summer Vacation Plans and COVID-19

This summer may be different from any summer we’ve experienced. COVID-19 has not only altered our daily routines and restricted our social lives, but has also put a dent in many of our vacation plans. Though restrictions may have eased up, it’s still important that we remain vigilant and follow safety measures. Here are some alternative trip ideas to help ensure that you make the most out of your summer while staying safe:

  • Consider a roadtrip with your family to a private campground
  • Close off from the world by putting down your phones and computers and be at peace with a “staycation” in the comfort of your own home
  • Be a tourist in your own city by discovering various pockets that you haven’t seen before, whether it’s a scenic drive or through a hike
  • Gather the family and plan a post-quarantine vacation that’ll be well worth it when the time comes
